There was someone who hacked into their systems and stole the code for Half Life 2 ahead of release and distributed the unfinished game - but Valve did not "redo" their game because of this. He also never made it to Seattle as many viewers have already noted here in the comments.

By the way Valve didn't redo Half-Life 2 because of the leak. The leak happened around 2003 when Valve had already changed the story to the one we have today, and the leak is the only way we know the story was different before that in the first place. Thought it was something worth mentioning :)

Can't say I wasn't entertained by season 8 of GoT, but the writing was a problem for me. As you said, the destination with how everything ended was great, but the way it was rushed made it seem like characters were doing things that were unlike them in regards to seasons 1-7, where with a little more development, we the twists could have seemed a lot more in-place.
